The Top 9 TV Shows to Watch in 2016

2016 is the year of the TV shows. There are so many out there that are popular, but I’ve chosen the ones which I think will be the most explosive this year.

AoS

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

A spin off of the Marvel movies, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is a television series following the spy organisation in the world of superheroes. S.H.I.E.L.D. stands for Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division and the concept of the show is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, tying in with the continuity of the films. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is currently in it’s third season, but in 2016 it is a definite must-watch if you’re a huge Marvel fan. The show stars many of the characters that are seen in movies such as Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, including Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson. The series was picked up by ABC in 2013, and currently airs on ABC in the U.S. and Channel 4 in the U.K. Joss Whedon is the main producer for the series, who also produced The Avengers, so there is no doubt that this show lives up to the expectations of the Marvel movies. If you’re having withdrawal symptoms between Marvel movies, pick this show up, it’ll definitely quench your thirst.

PLL

Pretty Little Liars

Very popular amongst teenage girls, Pretty Little Liars has become a global success. First airing in 2010 and continuing for 6 seasons, the premise of the series follows the lives of four girls whose lives fall apart after the disappearance of their leader. A year later they’re reunited and begin receiving messages from an unknown person named ‘A’, who begins to threaten to expose their deepest secrets. Together they must figure out who is trying to ruin their lives. The season 6 finale was one of the most watched finales recorded by ABC Family when the identity of ‘A’ was revealed. In 2016, the next season of Pretty Little Liars will begin, skipping five years into the future, and closing doors and answering questions to the season 6 finale that fans so desperately want. If you want to catch up and join in with the hype, you should really start binge watching this right now.

Gotham

Gotham

The DC Universe has been focused on something else recently, promoting Arrow and The Flash (we’ll get to that later) so the Batman storyline has been pretty quiet with the exception of the new Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice. This show has definitely been picking up on popularity lately and has some pretty good reviews on IMDb. It’s only been airing since 2014 but with the complex storylines, intriguing characters and the appearance of some of the most famous villains, this is definitely a show to start watching in 2016. Many TV shows are spin-offs or intertwine with each other, but this show is entirely individual which gives some originality. The cast are great; the storylines are dark – it’s definitely the show to watch.

TWD

The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead celebrates 6 years of airing this year, and it’s definitely not making the audience lose interest. Currently in it’s sixth season, the show follows the survival of many characters (although definitely not as many as Game of Thrones), as they try to confront a post-apocalyptic world overthrown by zombies, also known as Walkers. Throughout the seasons they have many issues coming from strangers, zombies and even within their own group, with characters dropping like flies. Because of the consistently increasing number of viewing figures, AMC, the company that produces it, keeps renewing it season after season. So it doesn’t look like it’ll be stopping anytime soon so you just have to check this out. I watched a season and a half in a day once.

LoT

Legends of Tomorrow

Legends of Tomorrow is an upcoming spin-off series of The Flash and Arrow, airing on The CW this year. If you watch Arrow and The Flash you’ll know that there are many characters coming together from both TV shows to form a team of heroes to defeat the main villain of the show, Vandal Savage. The show also introduces several new characters with actors Wentworth Miller, Arthur Darvill and Dominic Purcell playing characters Captain Cold, Rip Hunter and Heat Wave respectively. If this show is anything like Arrow and The Flash, then it’s something to definitely look forward to in 2016. The trailer has been released and it’s scheduled to be aired on The CW on Thursday 21st January and hopefully it’ll live up to the expectations that Arrow and The Flash have set.

Sherlock

Sherlock

Sherlock has taken the world by storm after capturing the minds of many audiences since 2010. This show is based on Arthur Conan Doyle’s original book series based on the super sleuth sociopathic detective and his blogger and doctor John Watson. But this show has a twist. Instead of being set in Victorian times, it is modern and allows a younger audience to identify with the characters and inform them of a classic character. Sherlock is played by Benedict Cumberbatch and thanks to this show, it has earned him worldwide fame, the hearts of millions of fangirls and a CBE. John Watson is played by Martin Freeman, a sarcastic yet loveable characters. Sherlock’s Christmas special was played on New Year’s Eve this year and the air date for season four has been released as January 2017, so it’s a long wait but plenty of time to catch up. Each series only has 3 episodes, but they last 90 minutes each. The episodes are intense, thrilling and mind-boggling; something anyone will enjoy. This show is probably the most in demand series and one of the most popular. It’s worth catching up with the story ready for the air date of series four in 2017.

Flash

The Flash

The Flash is a superhero TV series based on the DC character of the same name. Barry Allen, soon known as The Flash, is a superhero who is a crime scene investigator who gains super-human speed, which he uses to fight criminals, including others who have also gained superhuman abilities. The show was originally a pilot to see how well audiences reacted to a spin-off of Arrow but because it was so successful The CW commissioned a series. The show is now in it’s second season and regularly crosses over with Arrow. The show has a combination of emotional scenes, hilarity and loveable characters which makes the DC Comics come more to life and they’re able to get just as popular as Marvel. If you watch Arrow and don’t watch The Flash, it’s definitely a must-see.

Arrow

Arrow

Arrow is aired on The CW and is based on the characters Oliver Queen/The Green Arrow by DC Comics. It has been running from 2012 and is currently in it’s fourth season and hopefully will be renewed for a fifth (or I will cry for months. I’ve already lost Hannibal). Oliver Queen was a billionaire who got stranded on an island for five years, and trained to eventually become the Arrow. Throughout the series he is reconnected with his family, makes new friends who become his helpers as he becomes the Arrow and also makes a lot of enemies; some that were originally on the island with him. Arrow has received highly-positive reviews, with the highest ratings for a new show The CW has received in five years. Arrow has just started up again so check it out.

GoT

Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones is possibly one of the most popular TV shows in history. The TV show is based on the books A Song of Ice and Fire by George R R Martin, following several different houses in Westeros as they fight for the Iron Throne. The show involved violence, gore, sex, incest, nudity along with hot men, badass women, despicable characters and hilarious ones. The show has been airing since 2011, with the sixth season just being recently announced as airing on April 24th 2016, and the hype about it is unreal. After the ending of the fifth season and the fate of characters are unknown, fans have created multiple crazy theories. Game of Thrones has been nominated for many awards, showing the recognition it deserves along with a huge fanbase. Seriously, ask anyone and they’re bound to watch or at least know the show. If you want to keep up-to-date with teens and make new friends, start watching Game of Thrones.

So there it is. 9 TV shows you need to watch in 2016. Get binge-watching.
